Starting a Network From Scratch
Starting a Network from Scratch
Would it surprise you to find out that in a recent study done by HubSpot that 85% of jobs are filled through professional networks? Even in today's digital age, relying on putting your resume online or applying to a posted position is not enough. A robust professional network is becoming increasingly important in a digital age, making things more and more impersonal; creating meaningful professional connections will help elevate you above the rest.
But where do you begin?
If you are like most people, the thought of putting yourself out there and reaching out to strangers can be scary. The fear of rejection is a real thing, and the fact is, as you try to build your professional network, you are likely to face more rejection than success. Whether you are just starting to build your network or you are a seasoned professional, there are simple steps you can take to gain new contacts.
Start where a natural connection already occurs.
Look for networking groups where you can create a natural conversation starter. These will include groups like school alum groups, book clubs, church groups, or organizations you are a part of, like NACPB. Having something in common with the person you are attempting to network with makes it easier to start the conversation.
Utilize social media.
Like it, love it, or hate it, social media is here to stay. Ensuring your LinkedIn profile is current and mirrors your resume will be essential. When networking on social media, look for people you want to put into your network and send them a private message.
But what do I do to get them into my network?
This is where that fear of rejection is going to come in. You must put yourself out and be okay with people either not responding to you or outright rejecting you. Either way, you will have to put yourself out there to increase your network. Whether you have reached out to the person you have identified on social media or through a networking group, you should try to schedule a meetup. You should send them an email or private message or speak to them in person. Be sure to introduce yourself, tell them what you do for a living, and talk about how you would like to know more about them and what they do. Be sure to ask for a chance to meet with them for a one-hour conversation. To help secure the meeting, mention what you are trying to accomplish. For example, if you are trying to learn more about the bookkeeping industry, mention that to the person you are attempting to contact. The meeting can be a lunch meeting, coffee, walk around the courtyard, or virtual meetup. Regardless of the place, it would help if you came prepared. Do some research on the person and have some questions you would like to ask them. Try not to make it sound like an interview; instead, allow them to ask questions about you and allow the conversation to flow where it will naturally.
What do you do once the connection has been made?
After you have had a chance to meet with the person, it's best that you send them a follow-up thank you. While at the meeting, you could ask if you could take a picture with them and post it on LinkedIn. This can help others see that you are legit and not a scammer. Something that can help foster that relationship is to continue to follow up with them through social media, text, or phone. Like their posts on LinkedIn, repost things they post, or tag them in posts on things you think they would like.
Be Patient. It takes time.
As you build your professional network, the most important thing to remember is to be patient. It takes time to build your professional network and like with anything. You are bound to face rejection. The best thing to do is not dwell on those who have rejected you but build relationships with those who took the time to meet with you. The reality is people love to talk about themselves and their careers. They will appreciate you taking the time to get to know them. The more meaningful relationships you form with those in your network, the more opportunities will open up.
